Brighton Layson
Brighton Layson was born in 1981 in Harare, Zimbabwe, into a family of seven: four boys and three girls. Soon after completing his education at Ordinary Level, Brighton joined his brother Aaron Layson in stone carving at Gwindingwi Sculptures.
He worked with his brother for two years, then left for engineering and trained as a machinist at Wildrew Engineering. During that time he started making sculpting tools and became a major supplier to the art industry. In 2008 Brighton left engineering due to economic hardship, and in 2009, after the death of his brother Aaron, he decided to return to art.
He joined the Tamaa Art Centre and later moved to Dominic Studio, where he works today alongside Dominic Benhura and other well-known artists including Edie Masaya, Fabien Madamombe and Stanford Derere. At the studio he finds new inspiration, ideas and techniques. Nature is his main inspiration.
