Brian Chapenga

I would like to thank my brothers and friends for giving me a hand and providing me with ideas in developing my own style.

Brian was born in 1986 in Guruve, northern Zimbabwe, into a family of seven boys. He was inspired by his brothers while living at his homestead at the foot of Chiparambembwe hill, which is rich in fruit serpentine. With a source of stone so close, it was easy for him to experiment and develop as an artist. Using his brothers’ tools and the abundance of raw stone on the hill, he set his heart on sculpting.

By 1997, as a young boy, he saw some of his works collected by art dealers who toured the Guruve area, going deep into the villages to find artists’ work. He later joined the Sanganai Art Group to broaden his market, then moved to Harare, where he joined friends from his rural home and eventually partnered with his brother Stewart. Together they created their own display.

Brian’s sculpture practice continues to bloom and evolve, specialising in abstract flowers and figurative abstracts. To date his works have been collected by numerous collectors around the world. “I would like to thank my brothers and friends for giving me a hand and providing me with ideas in developing my own style. Even though I’m still young, I have gained enough ground in establishing my artistic career.”
